Gorkhi-Terelj National Park is a stunning natural area, approximately 70 kilometers northeast of the capital city, Ulaanbaatar. This place, located near Ulaanbaatar, offers the opportunity to witness natural wonders such as unique mountains, rocks, flowers, and birds, as well as experience the nomadic lifestyle. The rocky mountains in this area are composed of granite from the Mesozoic era, which have been eroded by water, wind, and time into distinctive shapes. One such formation is the "Turtle Rock," a large rock famous for its turtle-like appearance. Several rivers and streams, including the Terelj, Khurkh, Baruun Bayan, Dund Bayan, and Zuun Bayan, originate from the Terelj mountains and flow into the Tuul River. Terelj is also home to many historical and cultural landmarks such as the Aryabal Meditation Temple, Turtle Rock, Gunjiin Sum (Princess Temple), and the Crystal Cave.
The equestrian statue of Chinggis Khan in the NP has been registered in the Guinness Book of World Records and has been certified as the world's largest equestrian statue.
Horseback riding is a popular activity in Gorkhi-Terelj, offering visitors a unique way to experience the park's landscapes and nomadic culture. Guided horseback tours are available for riders of all skill levels also it is a paradise for rock climbers, with numerous granite rock formations.
Visitors to Gorkhi-Terelj have the opportunity to stay in traditional Mongolian gers at ger camps scattered throughout the park. The park is inhabited by nomadic herders who graze their livestock in the surrounding valleys.
The NP is easily accessible from Ulaanbaatar, making it a popular destination for day trips, weekend getaways, and longer excursions. It can be reached by road in approximately 1-2 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.
