Khongor Sand Dunes

Khongor Sand Dunes

Khongor Sand Dunes, extending 185 km from west to east along the Sevrei, Nomgon, and Zooolon mountains in Ömnögovi province, cover an area of 925 square kilometers. They are considered one of Mongolia's major oases. Some sand dunes collapse and slide due to the wind, creating a humming sound like that of an airplane, which can be heard from afar. The locals call these dunes the "Singing Dunes." Behind this continuous stretch of sand dunes flows a small river called Khongoryn Gol, which is over ten kilometers long. It creates lush green grass along its banks and forms a lake called "Adag Lake" at its lower end.
