Khurgan Lake

Lake Khoton and Lake Hurgan are located in the pristine wilderness of the Altai Tavan Bogd, the Zagastai Mountain, the Russian Altai, and the Mongolian Altai, nestled amidst the serene beauty of the ancient glaciers formed during the Ice Age. They are situated in the territory of Tsengel sum in Bayan-Ölgii aimag. They are part of the Altai Tavan Bogd Biosphere Reserve. The distance from the center of the aimag is 160 km, and from the center of Tsengel sum is 90 km.
Lake Khoton reaches an altitude of over 2083 meters above sea level, with a maximum depth of 58 meters, and an average depth of 26 meters. It stretches for 21.5 km in length, 4 km in width, covering a total area of 50 km2.


Lake Hurgan sits at an elevation of over 2072 meters above sea level, with dimensions of 23 km in length and 6 km in width. Its maximum depth is 28 meters, with an average depth of 7 meters, covering a total area of 71 km2. These two lakes are connected by a narrow strait. They are home to diverse flora and fauna. The place is named "Syrghali” by locals.
